Laboratory Work Surfaces: Laboratory Top Options
There are many styles for these laboratory surfaces:
- Epoxy Resin Counters & Resin Sinks, the most common lab top.
- Metal Laboratory Tops - bonded to core material or reinforced Steel
-
- Stainless Steel Standard 304 Grade common
-
- Stainless 316 Grade - laboratory standard chemical resistant.
- Gauge common 16 GA & 18 GA, Heavy 12 GA (thickness)
- Finish No. 4, a satin finish is somewhat a standard.
-
- Non conductive steel work bench top galvaneal
- Check Corrosion Data for resistances to various chemicals
- Email us for data so you select the appropriate grade of steel
- Solid Composites Thermoset reinforced w/ cellulose fibers - Trespa
- Polypropylene White (and special order black)
- Vinylester dished worksurfaces
- Scientific Plastics Polyolefin black sinks cast into countertop (black)
- Plastic Laminate Plywood, Industrial Board, MDF, PB, MEDEX, strawboard.
Marine Plywood is recommended for industrial lab and high moisture areas.
Laminated is available in many colors by many manufacturers such as Arborite, WilsonArt, and
many other manufacturers offer lab grade laminates, but you must specify lab grade.
A few manufacturers offer only black, so you should specify color preferences.
- Epoxy Resin tops are made in molds and comes in maximum lengths of 8 foot, require seaming. There is a 60 inch width maximum, so seams are required in wider tops. Seams are not perfect, molded tops have
inconsistancies or tolerances of acceptability. Ordering epoxy requires an understanding of how tolerances are determined and what is acceptable to industry may not be acceptable to your situation, so expect to
pay for perfection and ask for it at bid time.
- Coated Sand Stone, or Imperial Stone (Black) same size and sem issues as epxoy.
- Marble, most often for balance tables or as a slab, expensive compared to epoxy resin.
- Corian and similar composites are not advised for lab use.
- Arborite Plus resists chemicals and some scratching and is available in fire rated.
- Chemguard resists acid attack, is very scratch resistant has texture like WilsonArt Tuffsurf.
